Glyphosate China Monthly Report provides you with real-time intelligence on China's glyphosate market.

China is the world's largest producer of glyphosate, with 80% of the glyphosate produced in China being exported. Glyphosate is also still by far the most popular herbicide among Chinese farmers.

However, the industry is facing a number of serious long-term challenges. Increasing crop resistance threatens to make glyphosate less attractive to farmers, while research linking the product to cancer could lead to several key export markets banning the product altogether. Meanwhile, Chinese producers are struggling to comply with tough new environmental regulations and cope with severe industry overcapacity.

Glyphosate China Monthly Report will help you stay ahead of the game in this fast-changing market with real-time reporting on the entire glyphosate industry chain, from raw materials to end consumption. This includes:

  • Breaking news from China and abroad
  •
  • The latest market data, including price information for raw materials, intermediates and end products, import/export data, production, consumption, operating rates, etc.
  •
  • In-depth analysis of market trends, Chinese government policy, the performance of leading Chinese producers, M&A, new technologies, and more
  •

On 28 April, the MEE held its regular monthly press conference. At the conference, what's been achieved and what's next in environmental law enforcement was released, presenting a lot of information to digest. It's worth noting that implementation will be the environmental law enforcement priority going forward. As for the rectification campaign of sewage discharge along rivers and seas, the follow-up work is as follows: by the end of 2021, all the sewage outlets in the pilot areas along the Yangtze River, Bohai Sea and Yellow River will be registered. Each will get, a specific name, code and sign, so as to ensure accountability in the rectification. Other river basins and coastal areas, including Jiangsu Province, Shandong Province, Guangdong Province, Guizhou Province, and Sichuan Province, are following suit, with their local characteristics taken into consideration.

Zhejiang Wynca's costs of producing glyphosate TC in Q1, 2021 was higher than that of the same period of the previous year. The rise in price of the raw materials contributed a lot to the company's cost increase. In particular, Zhejiang Wynca's purchase price of glycine and paraformaldehyde jumped by 69.75% and 96.19% YoY, respectively. In response to that, the company became more cautious in producing glyphosate TC, and also purchased the TC from other producers to meet its own demand for glyphosate TC when producing glyphosate formulation.

ICAMA released a list of 179 agrochemical products that are going to be approved for registration. Their information was open for public opinions from 29 April, 2021 to 9 May, 2021. Among the 179 agrochemical products, altogether 8 are glyphosate products. On the Chinese glyphosate market, glyphosate TC has reached a state of equilibrium, while new glyphosate formulations are breaking new ground. With the encouragement of favourable national policies and the expansion of downstream demand, there will be more glyphosate formulations approved for registration.

The increase in the ex-works price of glycine amounted to over 10% from early May to mid- to late-May, which was higher than the MoM increase. The rise in glycine's ex-works price was mainly attributed to 2 reasons. First, the shortage of downstream glyphosate TC pushed up the price of its raw materials, including glycine. Second, the price of glycine's own raw materials rose as well, causing glycine's price to go up. Currently, the ex-works prices of glacial acetic acid and Urotropine, glycine's raw materials, are rising steadily. Therefore, it's expected that there's still room for the ex-works price of glycine to increase in the short term.

In mid-to-late May, the supply of yellow phosphorus in China was further tightened, which was mainly due to power rationing in the major producing provinces. In Yunnan Province, power rationing in May disrupted the production of many yellow phosphorus producers, and as a result, they were unable to supply their products to the market. Though yellow phosphorus producers in Guizhou Province were mostly able to keep production stable, their output was rather limited amid the electricity constraint. Some of them even brought their production to a halt for maintenance. The situation seemed to be a little better in Sichuan Province than in the other 2 provinces. The production of yellow phosphorus in Sichuan Province was relatively stable, but even so, the operating rate was still at a low level owing to the power rationing.

In mid-May, the average operating rate of Chinese glyphosate TC manufacturers fell to 64%. While most of the producers kept relatively stable production, others lowered the operating rate and even halted production due to decreased downstream orders, high upstream raw material costs, tightening environmental policies, and water and electricity crunch.

In May, the ex-works price of glyphosate TC has been climbing steadily. The quotations from some manufacturers rose over 10% MoM, with some even quoting a price of nearly USD6,163.80/t (RMB40,000/t). The price rise of upstream raw materials, short supply, and buoyant overseas demands are keeping up the price of the Chinese glyphosate TC. Going forward, whether the price of Chinese glyphosate TC will keep going up or not will depend largely on the demand from South America for Chinese glyphosate products.

On 8 May, Sinochem Holdings was inaugurated in Beijing. The conglomerate was created through the restructuring of Sinochem Group Co., Ltd. and China National Chemical Corporation Ltd., becoming the only SOE specializing in the chemical industry in China. I's understood that the chemical market in China is huge, but that at the same time, the domestic market players are not large enough. The birth of Sinochem Holdings indicates that the conglomerate will leverage economies of scale and that the overall industry is bound to become more concentrated.

Following Nantong Jiangshan's announcement on expanding its glyphosate TC capacity via acquisition, Xingfa Group also announced its plan to build 50,000 t/a glyphosate TC capacity by June, 2022. Xingfa Group enjoys an advantage over Nantong Jiangshan in terms of raw material supply. Notably, the glyphosate TC market in China is becoming more concentrated, with the major market players competing for leadership.
