Due to the low prices of corn starch and the sharp drop in downstream demand, the ex-works price of crystalline sorbitol dropped from USD1,205.79/t (RMB8,350/t) in Dec. 2019 to USD1,169.69/t (RMB8,100/t) in Feb. The ex-works price of 70% syrup sorbitol dropped from USD426.00/t (RMB2,950/t) in Dec. 2019 to USD415.17/t (RMB2,875/t) in Feb.

On 18 Feb., Xinzhou Municipal People's Government Network issued a public notice to attract investment for xylose-making project with corncob. According to the announcement, the construction site is located in Wuzhai County, with a total investment of about USD43.32 million (RMB300 million). The project proposes to build one 10,000 t/a of xylitol production line and 2,000 m2 of arabinose workshops.

According to the Chinese Sugar Association on 13 Feb., the cane sugar factories have fully entered the 2019/2020 sugar production period, while the northern beet sugar factories have basically finished production. By the end of Jan. 2020, China had produced 6.41 million tonnes of sugar in the 2019/2020 production period, an increase of 1.38 million tonnes YoY, and a cumulative sales of 3.20 million tonnes of sugar, up by 678,100 tonnes YoY.

In the middle and late Jan., QHT and Layn issued their earnings pre-announcements for 2019 one after another. QHT expected to make a net profit of USD17.44 million (RMB120.80 million) to USD23.26 million (RMB161.07 million) in 2019, down by 0% to 25% YoY. Layn estimated a net profit of USD11.79 million (RMB81.66 million) to USD15.33 million (RMB106.16 million) in 2019, up by 0% to 30% YoY.
