Recently, both Henan Billions Chemicals Co., Ltd. (Henan Billions) and Sichuan Lomon Corporation (Sichuan Lomon), the two leading TiO2 companies in China, gain the cleaner TiO2 production technology's certification in Beijing, which was licensed by a committee composed by China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation & China Environmental Sciences Society (the committee), according to CCM’s June issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report.
Henan Billions' certification is about the sulfur-iron-titanium joint cleaner TiO2 production technology. The committee considered that the sulfur-iron-titanium joint cleaner TiO2 production technology is stable; in the meantime, the quality of TiO2 produced by this technology is high and the mineral, water and energy cost of TiO2 production can also reach the international advanced level in TiO2 industry.
As for Sichuan Lomon, its certification is about the sulfur-phosphorous-titanium joint cleaner TiO2 production technology. Also, the committee considered that the sulfur-phosphorous-titanium joint cleaner TiO2 production technology achieved the circulation of substance and energy of sulfur, phosphorous and TiO2 production system.
Both Henan Billions and Sichuan Lomon gained profit from the cleaner TiO2 production technology. For Henan Billions, the cleaner TiO2 production technology increases the utilization ratio of titanium from 82% to 87%, and increases the utilization ratio of heat energy in sulfuric acid production system from 65% to 90%. Its total energy cost reduces by 40% (equals 50,000 tonnes of standard coal), its water cost reduces by 35% and the utilization of waste residue is one million tonnes per year. After adopting sulfur-iron-titanium joint cleaner TiO2 production technology, Henan Billions gained profit more than double in 2011 compared with that in 2010 and now it still keeps as one of the leading TiO2 companies in China.
As to Sichuan Lomon, the cleaner TiO2 production technology brings 100% use of waste sulfuric acid (the sulfate process of TiO2) and produces sulfuric acid from ferrous sulfate for the first time in China. It can increase the quality of titanium concentrate ore and the recovery of titanium. Obviously, with the sulfur-phosphorous-titanium joint cleaner TiO2 production technology, Sichuan Lomon gained a lot of margin in 2011 and now it keeps as the largest exporter of TiO2 in China.
Developing cleaner TiO2 production technology is a strategy and a trend for TiO2 companies in China. Most of the production technologies of TiO2 (sulfate process) in China have the weakness of high material cost, high pollution and high energy cost, and they are restrained by the Twelfth Five-Year Plan (2011-2015) of China. In the meantime, it is difficult to change the production technology of TiO2 from sulfate process to chloride process completely in China, for the limited technology (the technology of chloride process is only grasped by TiO2 multinationals like DuPont), and low quality of titanium concentrate ore in China (only suitable for sulfate-process). In this case, developing cleaner TiO2 production technology of TiO2 (sulfate process) is urgent for TiO2 companies in China.
Overall, in China, TiO2 companies' cleaner TiO2 production technology can enhance their competitiveness through pollution and production cost reduction.
Meanwhile, other TiO2 companies without cleaner TiO2 production technology would be washed out in China in the future.
