Japan’s coking coal imports increase by 1.6% y-o-y in Q1

Japan imported 17.9 million tons of coking coals in the first quarter of this year, up by 1.6% year on year, according to data released by the Ministry of Finance.

In the given period of time, Australia was the largest exporter of coking coals to Japan with 8.95 million tons, down by 8% and Indonesia was the second largest one with 5.9 million tons, increasing by 30%, both compared to those in the same period of a year ago.

In March alone, the country's imports of coking coals totaled 6.7 million tons, soaring by 34.6% from a month ago and rising by 24% year on year.
