India's Jindal Steel & Power has this month started producing coal at its mine in the Moatize region of Mozambique, with the first exports expected by January next year, according to media reports. The mine will produce both coking and thermal coal.

Jindal plans to produce and ship coal at its mine in Mozambique at an initial annual rate of 1.3 million mt, ramping up to 10 million mt over three to four years.

The company also aims to link its mine to the Sena railway line which global miners Vale and Rio Tinto use to transport coal to the Mozambican port of Beira.
