A large number of Chinese people still blindly reject or have a fuzzy understanding of GM products; even some experts and organizations have been greatly opposing the commercial planting of GM grain crops. Government departments represented by the MOA have been strengthening the publicity of the knowledge on GM technology and products, aiming at dispelling the public's fear and misunderstanding. There is a speculation that GM grain crops would be released in China sooner or later mainly for the rising food security issues and huge commercial value of GM crops.

Brazil will lobby China to speed approval with Chinese government on three new gene-modified (GM) varieties of soybean into China market, a Brazil's official revealed. Brazil is the second largest exporter of soybean only after USA. China is its largest buyer and its 70% soybean is sold to China every year. At present nearly 90% soybean is gene-modified. It is most likely to become the top soybean producer beyond USA by increasing the output of gene-modified varieties this year. Industry group Oil World estimates that Brazil will produce 81.3 million tonnes of soy in 2013, up 22% than 2012.

"We came in August 2012 to try to get approval for the last harvest season, but the approval was not granted, so we lost one season of potential harvest last year." said Celio Porto, secretary of Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply. "Brazil hopes to get China's approval for the three new GM soybean varieties before the start of the planting season in September."

China, which imported more than 50 million tonnes of gene-modified soybean last year, disclosed that Brazil's applications were being processed and decisions can take about 270 days. Brazil, which counts China as its top trading partner, also hopes to reach agreement soon in order to export corn. As China is one of the world's main buyers of the grain, such a move could decrease market share of the United States.
