Peru's Ministry of Production (Produce) is implementing a new Surveillance and Control of Fisheries and Aquaculture Programme for the entire aquatic resources production chain, in order to strengthen supervision and combat illegal fishing in the sector. The control system will comprise artisanal vessels (small and large); plants that process fish products for direct and indirect human consumption; residual fishmeal plants; discard plants; and those engaged in transportation and marketing of seafood products. Also included is larger scale aquaculture. When transporting aquatic products by land, a certificate of origin must be carried by the transporter. Failure to comply will result is the shipment being confiscated and a fine for the carrier. Produce is launching a public tender for the monitoring contract in the coming days.
