Guangzhou China Nov. 2, 2010 - The findings from Bangladesh Rice Research Institute recently indicate that the growth rate of pesticide consumption has already reached up to 328% in Bangladesh for the past 10 years.
Based on the application situation of toxic pesticides in arable land of Bangladesh from 1997 to 2008, the study shows that the consumption of pesticide was 8,000 tonnes in 1997; it increased to 16,000 tons in 2000, doubled that of1997. The amount of pesticide was nearly 20,000 tonnes from 2005 to 2006; the amount of pesticide increased to 48,690 tonnes and the consumption of per unit area increased by about 598.8% in 2008. The market value of import of pesticides remains USD1,714.3 million. Insecticide is a main variety of pesticides, accounting for 76% of the total consumption of pesticides.
Compared with other countries, pesticides are seriously abused in vegetable planting in Bangladesh, which is also the reason of leading the country's vegetable export reduce. Apart from acute poisoning, the pesticide residues also damage people's health in the long term. Experts warn that if the appropriate alternative methods aren't adopted, such as integrated pest management to control abuse of pesticides, the consumption of pesticides will be further increased.
