On May 29, CNPC received a command that a large amount of polystyrene foam be prepared urgently, sent by the State-Owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission and the Ministry of Housing and
Urban-Rural
Development. Upon receiving the command, CNPC approved an urgent plan that Fushun Petrochemical, Dalian Petrochemical and Huabei Petrochemical should produce 15,000 tons of styrene in 45 days to stabilize market prices and meet the demand for temporary housing in quake-hit areas.
Polystyrene foam, known for its lightness, heat and sound insulation, and resistance to erosion and water, is often used in the lining of temporary housing. After the May 12 earthquake, because of huge demand, the price of polystyrene foam has risen by 10%.
