The Western Crude Oil Pipeline was put into operation on June 30.

The Western Pipeline has the longest transmission distance, the highest designed pressure and the largest designed delivery capacity in China. The pipeline starts at Urumqi in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and ends at Lanzhou in Gansu Province, traveling nearly 4,000 kilometers with 13 station yards along the line. The crude trunk has a designed annual deliverability of 20 million metric tons, with 10 million metric tons for the products trunk. The Western Pipeline will be a strategic channel to deliver oil resources from western China to markets in the east.

Construction of the Western Pipeline commenced in March 2005. The Western Products Pipeline, laid in the same ditch, went on stream early in September 2006. Commissioning of the Western Crude Oil Pipeline means that the whole pipeline has become operational.
