FSSC 22000 scheme to cover animal feed
Food Safety System Certification 22000 scheme (FSSC 22000)will extend its scope to include animal feed, according to recent publication of the PAS 222.
The PAS 222 - Prerequisite programmes for food safety in the manufacture of food and feed for animals aims to ensure confidence in animal food and feed production by collecting good practices for the manufacture and distribution of animal food feed and ingredients from manufacturers around the world.
The PAS 222 specification was developed to help manufacturers with establishing preventative measures to ensure the safety of their products and to assure customers that a comprehensive food safety system is in place.
Sponsored by SSAFE (Safe Supply of Affordable Food Everywhere), the specification was developed with broad stakeholder representation through a steering group including leading organisations such as the Agricultural Industries Confederation (AIC), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Foundation for Food Safety Certification (FSSC), Cargill, Land O''Lakes, Nestl?? and Nutreco.
Developed in response to growing requests from the animal feed industry, the prerequisite programmes outlined in PAS 222 are of particular interest to organisations involved in the manufacturing and supply of compound animal feed and ingredients utilised in the manufacture of animal feed and pet food, as well as to certification bodies and public authorities.
This development is also in line with the commitment for FSSC from the international food manufacturers and the GFSI ambition to extend the current GFSI scopes. This integrated supply chain approach allows FSSC to provide certification for more sectors in the supply chain based on ISO 22000 and technical specifications for sector specific prerequisite programmes.
FSSC 22000 is ready to cover additional sectors at the moment the necessary prerequisite programmes for a sector have been realised and relevant stakeholders in the international food sectors request FSSC 22000 to cover these sectors.
