US Kansas gets funding for improving livestock feed quality

Kansas is receiving a US$1.1-million federal grant to improve its efforts to keep animal feed safe.

The state Department of Agriculture announced the grant Monday (Sep 27) from the US Food and Drug Administration.

The state agency will use part of the money for 50 additional inspections each year of companies that make, distribute or transport animal feed. It now does 287 inspections annually.

The inspections are designed to make sure the feed is free of materials that could lead to mad cow disease.

Also, the department says the grant will allow it to replace aging lab equipment used to test grain feed for toxins caused by mould.
