China, world''s top pork producer, a lucrative market for pig vaccines, says report

China produced 54.93 million tonnes of porkin 2013, accounting for nearly 50% of the world''s total output that year.

The meat came from 474.11 million pigs, according to the 2014-2018 market research publication on the China Swine Fever Vaccine Industry released recently by Reportstack.

In terms of meat, China''s production represented an increase of 2.8% year-on, the report said. But in number of pigs, it was a decline of 0.4% year-on.

The report also saidthat China''s stock volume of fattened pigs that year was 715.57 million, up 2.5% year-on.

On the animal health side, the report pointed to swine fever asthe most prevalent hog disease that needed"strict prevention, control and extermination."

Swine fever vaccine, the report added, was one of the industry''s most administered vaccines for pigs.

China has a "mature technology" as far aspig vaccine production is concerned, so most large-scale pig farms in the countryused local brands than their imported counterparts.

China has 48 manufacturers of spleen neisseria vaccines and cell vaccines. Cell vaccines used to be produced by Guangdong Winsun Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. Through technology transfer, Dahuanong and Liaoning Yikang Biology Co.,Ltd. began to produce the products, but Guangdong Winsun is still the market leader in cell vaccines in China.

Under government expense, compulsory immunity is carried out in the country on four kinds of animal diseases including swine fever.

The report pointed out that with the increasing living standards among the Chinese, demand for pork will continue to rise. But with disease epidemics continuing to occur on a regular basis, China offers many investment opportunities for manufacturers of animal vaccines, it added.
