Mexico''s poultry production forecast to rise in 2015
Despite the impact of animal diseases, Mexico is expecting a modest increase in production of broiler meat and eggs for 2015.
The ongoing consolidation, along with improved biosecurity measures, is expected to drive the country''s commercial broiler production for 2015, though challenges remain as the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreaks in 2012 and 2013 spread across the country.
As a result of the HPAI outbreaks, Mexico''s poultryindustry modernised and implemented contingency insurance. While forecast for broiler meat production in 2014 is revised down to 3 million tonnes due to ongoing minor AI outbreaks in certain areas, and estimates for 2013 remain unchanged, 2015''s production is forecast to rise as consumption growth recovers.
With the increase in prices and volumes of imported products, Mexico is expected to export more poultry in 2015. The US remains the leading supplier of poultry and poultry products to Mexico. During January to May 2014, approximately 98% of Mexico''s chicken and turkey imports were from the US. Chile and Canada are the other two major exporters.
Commercial turkey production for 2015 is forecast to grow marginally, as producers have little incentive to increase production with challenges of the production system for breeding, growing, slaughtering and further processing.
While the country''s turkey meat imports for 2015 is forecast to rise marginally, exports of turkey meat will remain the same.
