USPOULTRY and the USPOULTRY Foundation have completed a funded research project at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C., that evaluated a new vaccine to protect again two important diseases.

The project is part of the Association's comprehensive research programme encompassing all phases of poultry and egg production and processing.

The research project, led by doctors Isabel Gimeno and James Guy at North Carolina State University, evaluated a new vaccine candidate which could be valuable for protecting chickens against both Marek's disease and infectious laryngotracheitis. The new recombinant vaccine is a Marek's disease virus into which genes of infectious laryngotracheitis virus have been inserted. The new vaccine shows potential advantages over existing vaccines. The results open a new avenue in the development of recombinant vaccines for use in poultry.
