Southern China’s economic hub Guangdong province imported 5.22 million tonnes of
coal
in November, dropping 9.22% year on year and edging down 0.4% from October -- the third consecutive drop on a year-on-year basis, according to the latest Chinese customs data.The total value of the November imports was $344.38 million, which translates to an average price of $65.97/t, down $0.11/t on month but up $1.50/t on year.Imports of thermal coal, mainly used for power generation, stood at 4.21 million tonnes in November, down 7.9% month on month and down 14.6% year on year.Of this total, lignite imports accounted for 40.1% or 1.69 million tonnes, down 22.1% from October and plunging 41.9% year on year. About 87.6% of the total lignite imports were from Indonesia.Guangdong province also imported 0.72 million tonnes of coking coal in November, surging 53.2% from the month before and three times more than the year-ago level.China Huaneng Fuel Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the country’s top generator Huaneng Group, imported 458,513 tonnes of coal in November, the highest in the province, surging 127.9% year on year and up 4.5% on month.Another state-owned Guangxi Liuzhou Iron and Steel Company imported 319,189 tonnes of coal in the same month, increasing 39.2% from October.Guangdong Yudean Group Co., Ltd. imported 273,412 tonnes of coal in November, plummeting 60.2% year on year and down 59.1% on month.Over January-November this year, total coal imports reached 56.89 million tonnes, down 2.6% from the same period last year, with total value down 10.4% year on year to $3.86 billion.During the same period, thermal coal imports reached 49.65 million tonnes, up 1.7% year on year, with lignite growing 6.1% year on year to 23.87 million tonnes, while coking coal imports stood at 3.14 million tonnes, down 4.7% from a year ago.
