China has decided to reduce coal consumption by more than 160 million tonnes in industrial sectors except power sector by 2020, sources reported, citing relevant authorities. The target is part of a soon-to-be unveiled action plan on efficient and clean coal utilization formulated by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the Ministry of Finance, reported theNational Business Daily.Meanwhile, the country will work to cut emissions of 1 million tonnes of smoke, 1.2 million tonnes of sulfur dioxide and 800,000 tonnnes of nitrous oxides by 2020.These targeted industrial sectors mainly include coking, coal chemical, industrial boilers and industrial furnaces.Cities or towns with huge energy consumption are required to compile detailed local action plan, which not only refers to air cleaning but also industrial structure adjustment and regional harmonious development, officials with the Energy Conservation Division of MIIT were cited as saying.By 2017, China aims to reduce coal consumption by at least 80 million tonnes in these industrial sectors, and slash emissions of 500,000 tonnes of smoke, 600,000 tonnes of sulfur dioxide and 400,000 tonnnes of nitrous oxides. The ministries will explore multiple financing channels, including government support and private capitals, to ensure implementation of the plan, the officials said.Despite continuous efforts to curb coal consumption and improve air quality, China remains one of the most polluted countries in the world and still has a long way to go to be environmentally friendly.China’s coal consumption reached some 4 billion tonnes of standard coal in 2014, half of which was used in industrial sectors mentioned above.
