Due to the cold weather and big difference in temperature between day and night, the avian influenza outbreak in Taiwancontinued to spread, Xinhua News Agency reported.

According to Taiwan's agriculture authorities, over two million poultry had been culled since early last week as part of the nation's efforts to stem the spread of the virus.

As of February 4, a total of 701 goose, duck and chicken farms across 14 cities in Taiwan had been inspected and 674 farms have been indentified as infected with H5 strains of the avian influenza. Subsequent culls and disinfection of the infected farms have been carried out, with over 2.14 million poultry culled.

The infected farms are located throughout Taiwan, with Changhua, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan and Pingtung experiencing more sever outbreaks.
