Mar-Jac Poultry has announced it will build a $25-million chicken feed millin Spruce Pine, Alabama, USA.

Pete Martin, vice president of operations for Mar-Jac, said construction is scheduled to start in June and that the new facility would "hopefully be open and running by 2017".

The Franklin County Development Authority (FCDA) welcomed the project as "the start of something bigger".

FCDA Executive Director Mitch Mays said a lot of hard work and cooperation went into bringing the mill to Franklin County. "Right now it is a good first step for the county and for this area, but maybe it can be the start of something bigger. I certainly would like to see more expansion and further economic growth in our county".

Martin said the economic impact on the county and the region as a whole would be around $1.2 billion.

State Senator Larry Stutts said he was "thankful that Mar-Jac chose this area for their expansion".

"For the farmers in our state, this gives one more outlet for them to sell to", he added.

Mar-Jac Poultry, a fully integrated poultry production company, was established in 1954 in Gainesville, Georgia, and has supplied a variety of poultry products since then.

It operates a state-of-the-art hatchery in Lula, Georgia, and a modern feed mill in Maysville, Georgia, which currently produces over 8,500 tonnes of feed per week.
