US coal exports totaled more than 6.9 million tonnes in March, up 12.8% from the month prior but down 27% from the year before, the US Census reported on May 5.The monthly increase was largely due to weather issues at Eastern ports during the month of February, which pushed some loadings into March. However, the year-over-year decline reflected continued weakness in the seaborne market.Exports of coking coal totaled 4.8 million tonnes in March, up 63.5% from February but down 15.6% from the previous year. In the first quarter, coking coal exports totaled 12.3 million tonnes, down 19.9% on year.Bituminous coal exports totaled 1.7 million tonnes in March, down 30.1% from the previous month and down 44.9% from the year-ago level. Over January-March, bituminous coal exports totaled 6.3 million tonnes, down 19.7% on year.Subbituminous coal exports totaled 385,418 tonnes in March, down 23.8% from February and down 43.4% from a year ago. For the year through March, subbituminous exports totaled 1.2 million tonnes, down 35.6% on year.The Netherlands imported the most US thermal coal in March at 687,000 tonnes, followed by South Korea at 284,000 tonnes and India at 220,000 tonnes.The largest importer of US coking coal in March was India, at 900,000 tonnes, followed by South Korea at 448,000 tonnes and Japan at 405,000 tonnes.At the current run rate through the first quarter, US coal exports for 2015 would total roughly 80.7 million tonnes, the least amount since 2010.
