Prices of low-sulphur coking
coal
prices rebounded 5-10 yuan/t in some production areas in Shanxi province, amid short supply and restocking demand from downstream sectors. One source said some producers in Luliang, one major coking coal production base in Shanxi, have increased the price of low-ash, low-sulphur lean coal, one type of coking coal blend, by around 10 yuan/t, as demand improved due to short supply of imported coking coal. One trader from Shouyang, Jinzhong said local lean coal prices have climbed 5-10 yuan/t, as output dropped amid safety checks launched by the provincial government from May 1.One Jinzhong-based washing plant said some miners have increased raw coking coal prices by 5-10 yuan/t amid production cut recently, but the prices of washed coal haven’t ceased falling but almost hit the bottom. The ex-washplant price of fat coal with 1.8% sulphur was 410-420 yuan/t, while that of coking coal with 1.6% sulphur was 420-430 yuan/t, VAT-excluded, a second Jinzhong-based source said. Many producers expected the market to stabilize late this month. One supplier said its end users would not change purchase prices in the short run; another producer said few end users showed buying interests amid high stocks. One Hebei-based buyer said coking coal prices now are at a reasonable level, with limited growth potential, as imported products may increase in June. Another Hebei-based buyer said the purchase price may stay steady for a while. Some sources still held pessimistic attitude to the short-term market. One buyer said it was negotiating with Shanxi suppliers for price cut of 10-20 yuan/t and anticipated further cuts in June, albeit at limited extent.A third Hebei-based buyer said the price of low-sulphur coal may increase in the short run, due to end users’ temporary restocking demand and adjustment to coal blending mix.On May 19, The CCI Met Shanxi Premium Low Vol index assessed ex-washplant price of Liulin premium low-sulphur primary coking coal at 650 yuan/t with VAT; while CCI Met Shanxi High-sulphur Low Vol index was at 485 yuan/t with VAT, both unchanged on day and on week. The CCI Met North China Fat Coal index assessed the delivered price of high-fluidity, mid-volatile coking coal delivered to Tangshan at 745 yuan/t with VAT, unchanged on day but down 5 yuan/t from the week before.
