Southern China’s economic hub Guangdong province imported 4.25 million tonnes of coal in April, down 23.0% year on year and down 0.9% from March -- the eighth consecutive year-on-year drop, according to the latest Chinese customs data.The total value of the April imports was $241.92 million, which translates to an average price of $56.92/t, down $2.06/t on month and down $8.31/t on year.Imports of thermal coal, mainly used for power generation, stood at 3.98 million tonnes in April, up 0.8% month on month but down 20.7% year on year.Of this total, lignite imports accounted for 58.3% or 2.32 million tonnes, down 3.7% from March and down 17.1% year on year. About 2.13 million tonnes or 91.8% of the total lignite imports were from Indonesia.Guangdong province also imported 0.27 million tonnes of coking coal in April, down 18.2% from the month before but surging 200% on year.Over January-April, the province imported a total 14.6 million tonnes of coal, down 37.4% year on year, data showed.Total thermal coal imports during the same period reached 13.27 million tonnes, down 32.7% on year, with lignite imports at 7.32 million tonnes, down 23.3%; while coking coal imports was 1.31 million tonnes, down 12.9%.
