Guangdong May coal imports down 15pct on yr

Southern China’s economic hub Guangdong province imported 3.19 million tonnes of coal in May, down 15.2% year on year and down 24.9% from April -- the ninth consecutive yearly and the second straight monthly drop, according to the latest Chinese customs data.The total value of the May imports was $170.94 million, which translates to an average price of $53.69/t, down $3.34/t on month and down $15.22/t on year.Imports of thermal coal, mainly used for power generation, stood at 3.05 million tonnes in May, down 23.4% month on month and down 10.6% year on year.Of this total, lignite imports accounted for 59.3% or 1.81 million tonnes, down 22.0% from April but up 7.1% year on year. About 1.73 million tonnes or 95.6% of the total lignite imports were from Indonesia.Guangdong province also imported 0.14 million tonnes of coking coal in May, slumping 48.1% from the month before but increasing 16.7% on year.Over January-May, the province imported a total 17.78 million tonnes of coal, down 34.3% year on year, data showed.Total thermal coal imports during the same period reached 16.31 million tonnes, down 29.5% on year, with lignite imports at 9.13 million tonnes, down 18.6%; while coking coal imports was 1.44 million tonnes, up 13.4%.
