As the industrial biotechnology industry is playing an increasingly important role in the national economic development, its connection with governmental policies and other social and economic activities also becomes stronger and closer. Since the Chinese central government started to promote the policy of "energy saving and emission reduction" as early as 2006, the local governments have taken various kinds of measurements and established new laws and policies to meet the requirements.
The recent diesel-shortage storm started from early November 2010 was also closely related to the policy. The mandates of power brownout from the local governments led many enterprises to resort to diesel engine generator, resulting in excess consumption of domestic diesel which further led to the diesel-shortage storm. However, this diesel-shortage storm in turn boosted the demand for domestic biodiesel.
On the other side, "energy saving and emission reduction" also urges the government to promote the commercialization of clean energy, especially biofuel ethanol and meanwhile restrain the development of industries with excess capacity and serious pollutants discharge, which make funds and resources flow from parts of these restrained industries to the biofuel ethanol industry.
Moreover, more and more new biomaterials have emerged on the market or initiated their commercialization journeys. For instance, biomasses molding fuel, starch-based biodegradable dishes and oxo-biodegradable additive have showed up in a national expo; industrialization process of algae-based fiber and polyglutamic acid production are being accelerated. Meanwhile, some industrialized biomaterials are undergoing capacity expansion currently. On the whole, the industrial biotechnology industry, especially biofuel and biomaterials, are changing people's social and economic activities.
