China’s Sep coking coal imports down 4.5pct on mth

China’s coking coal imports fell 12% year on year and down 4.5% from August to 3.96 million tonnes in September – the second straight monthly drop, showed the latest data from the General Administration of Customs (GAC).Imports from top supplier Australia dropped 1.4% from the previous year and down 16.9% from a month ago to 2.16 million tonnes in September – the third consecutive month-on-month fall.The decline of Australian imports was mainly because traders slowed down purchase before October amid weak domestic demand and fluctuant RMB exchange rate. Besides, buying activities were also impacted by the cancelation of Australian import tariff from January 1 2016, which may cut CIF cost by 10-20 yuan/t.Coking coal imports from Mongolia – China’s second largest supplier – rose 1.2% on month but down 7.6% on year to 0.85 million tonnes during the same month.Canada exported 0.74 million tonnes of coking coal to China in September, rising 64.5% on month but down 1.4% on year.Imports from Russia reached 0.21 million tonnes in September, falling 28% from a year ago and down 20.8% from the previous month.Over January-September, China’s coking coal imports fell 17.9% on year to 36.4 million tonnes.Top supplier Australia exported a total 19.59 million tonnes of coking coal to China during the same period, down 6.1% year on year.
