AgroChemEx was held at Shanghai Everbright Convention and Exhibition Center on 20-22 Oct. 2011. CCM International visited the exhibition to survey 2011 pesticide market. As the most important segment in China's pesticide industry, rice insecticide market still attracts much attention, though it underperforms this year due to the minor occurrence of pests, according to CCM’s November issue of Insecticides China News.

Insiders divided the rice insecticide products into three categories based on the development trend of future consumption. The first category will enjoy consumption rise in the future, the second one will see stable consumption and the third one will face drop.

Chlorantraniliprole and flubendiamide are the hottest products. After being introduced to China in 2008, DuPont's 200g/l chlorantraniliprole SC has become one of the most important pesticides to combat rice leaf roller in China. Besides, Syngenta's 20% thiamethoxam • 20% chlorantraniliprole WDG, Bayer CropScience's 3.3% abamectin • 6.7% flubendiamide SC are also widely applied by Chinese farmers. Thanks to good control effect, these products are expected to enjoy an increasing consumption in the future.

However, there are still some risks for these products. At present, some Chinese companies are illegally producing and marketing these products, which may impact the business of overseas companies.

Owing to the outbreak of rice black streaked dwarf disease, the consumption of imidacloprid and thiamethoxam (both for seed treatment) is expected to increase in the future. At present, some peasants adopt imidacloprid or thiamethoxam to treat rice seeds to prevent white-backed planthopper spreading rice black streaked dwarf virus, and achieve good control results.

The consumption of some excellent insecticides such as thiacloprid, pymetrozine, indoxacarb and spinosadare also expected to increase.

Cyantraniliprole and dinotefuran, having not been registered in China yet, already attract much attention. Insiders revealed that these two insecticides are expected to be registered in the near future and will grab big pesticide market share. The former is for the control of rice leaf roller and the latter for controlling rice planthopper.

The consumption of chlorpyrifos, abamectin, buprofezin, dichlorvos, triazophos, nitenpyram, acetamiprid, acephate and phoxim is expected to keep stable in the near future. At present, most of Chinese pesticide companies are producing and marketing the formulations of these products; the competition will be quite stiff.

The consumption of some old and highly toxic products such as isocarbophos, phorate and bisultap will decrease in the future. With the increase in public awareness and demand for safe foods, the application of highly toxic products will surely face tougher restriction from the government.

Insiders also said that the development of rice pests' resistance will have huge impact on the rice insecticide market. At present, pests' resistance to abamectin develops very quickly, which casts a cloud over the future of this product.
