Vietnam''s seafood production up 1.1% in September
   
   

   

Vietnam produced a total of almost 600,00 metric tonnes of seafood in September, an increase of 1.1% from the same month last year, data from the Directorate of Fisheries showed.

   

   

Seafood production for the first nine months totaled 4.8 million metric tonnes, up 2.8% from the same period in 2014.

   

   

Data also showed the following:

   

   
Capture harvest in September: 284,000 metric tonnes, up 3% year on year. Cumulative capture in January-September: 2.262 million metric tonnes, up 4%. Marine capture outweighed inland catches.
   
   
Farmed seafood in September: 315,000 metric tonnes. Flat from last year. Cumulative nine-month period: 2,584,200 metric tonnes, up 2%.
   
   
Pangasius (silver-striped catfish) volume in first nine months: 757,000 metric tonnes, up 10% year on year. Farming area was nearly the same at 4,200 hectares.
   
   
Black tiger shrimp in first nine months: 220,000 metric tonnes, up 20%. Farming area increased 3.5% to 613,000 ha.
   
   

Vanamei (whiteleg) shrimp in first nine months: 190,000 metric tonnes. Decrease noted. Farming area shrank to 72,000 ha.

   

   

Vietnam is one of the world''s top producers of seafood, particularly pangasius and shrimp.
