Lower worldwide exports of Vietnam''s tuna despite growth in some markets

Vietnam''s tuna exports to Canada had rose 61% in August year-on-year to a value of US$1.4 million despite overall deliveries to foreign markets falling 10% to US$39.8 million, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters & Producers (VASEP).

Together with lower global tunaprices, the drop in exports was attributed to weaker demand from key markets.

Moreover, the upward trend in August tuna sales to Canada is inadequate to alleviate less-than-favourable performances in the past months, specifically between January and August this year when deliveries churned out a US$6.1 million earning, a 27.6% drop year-on-year.

80% of Vietnam''s tuna exports head to Canada, at a value of about US$5 million. Tuna loins were the main shipments, worth US$3.8 million. In addition to Vietnam, Canada also imports from 52 other suppliers including those in leading exporting nations, Thailand and the Philippines.

In the US, Vietnamese tuna imports increased 11% year-on-year in the first eight months of 2015, achieving a value of US$127.3 million. Even then, August saw a 1.6% slid to US$16 million, VASEP reported.

On the EU front, exports to the bloc fared much worse; a 25% plunge was observed during January to August this year, to close to US$69 million.

Some silver linings amidst negative trends can be seen in deliveries to ASEAN; exports rose 8% to a value of US$23.3 million in the first eight months of 2015, and the region positioned in the third place for top import markets receiving Vietnamese tunas.

In addition, exports to Japan had also witnessed a 16% growth for canned tuna, to a value of US$4.8 million during the January-August 2015 period.
