Vietnam's seafood exports climb 9% y-o-y

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP) said that after a long period of difficulty, the country's seafood exports reached US$1.4 billion, 9% higher than same period last year, SGGP reports.

The increase in seafood exports showed a good sign of recovery. Specifically, the exports of shrimp and fish leaped by 12.2 and 4.2% respectively. Exports to major markets increased by 12% for the US, 33% for China and 22% for the ASEAN market.

Brazilian demand for Vietnamese tra catfish leaped eightfold compared to same period last year.

However, some industry experts cited concern that Vietnamese fish exports would face difficulties in future. VASEP's general secretary Truong Dinh Hoa fretted that the Department of Commercial has decided to apply new tariffs on Vietnamese frozen catfish. As per the decision, Vietnamese catfish will face a tax ranging from US$0.41 – 0.97 per kilogram which might cause difficulties for Vietnamese exporters in the future.
