This report introduces a kind of degradable plastic, polypropylene carbonate (PPC). In this report, CCM mainly focuses on China’s PPC industry from several aspects, including the industry background, the production, and the factors that influencing the domestic development of degradable plastics, etc.



PPC degradable plastic was first synthesized in 1969 but wasn’t put into industrial production until 1994. Up to 2015, there were two producers of PPC degradable plastic in the US, namely Novomer Inc. and Empower Materials Inc., while there were five in China.



In 2015, China’s total capacity of PPC degradable plastics was 63,000 t/a, and the ex-works price was about USD4,013/t. Because of its poor processability and mechanical performance, PPC has a narrow range of applications in China when compared with other degradable plastics such as polylactic acid (PLA) and polybutylene succinate (PBS).



Chinese government has issued some policies to support the development of PPC degradable plastic. For instance, PPC was listed as one of the major products supported by the government, according to the Notice on Issuing the Implementation Plan for Major Innovative Development Projects of Bio-based Materials.
